With all the fads that have raced through Sydney it may be easy to miss one or two, however, Sydney’s love of Mexican food is here to stay. Similar to what happened in the U.S., once people started to realise just how good Mexican food is, it never left. With the Mad Mex’s and Guzman y Gomez’s popping up all over the place you can now get Mexican in Sydney at any time of the day. But if you want to know where everyone is going to really satisfy their Mexican cravings, simply head over to Glebe, home one of the cities most popular haunts, Flying Fajita Sistas.
The restaurant is an unassuming little place that doesn’t necessarily grab your first glance amidst the buzzing strip of Glebe Point Road, where it is located. Though it is as soon as you get closer, that you being to pick up the sounds of music and lively chatter and the flashing waves of blue Mexican-themed shifts worn by the fast moving staff, that you know there’s a fiesta going on inside! It is easy to see how this little restaurant has brought the best of Mexican tastes and culture to Sydney and become an icon of Glebe itself.
One of their most popular nights is Taco Tuesday, and it’s really not to be missed. I would recommend going in a group of 4 or more because that enables you to order the Taco Platter, ($12 per person) depending on how many people you have. Each person gets 1 taco of each Tomatillo braised Ropa Vieja (shredded beef), Frijoles (refried beans), Chipotle chicken, and Achiote Pulled Pork. The platter ends up being a great deal since you get a side of Guacamole, Ancho Salsa and Crema for no extra cost. We like that!
These are not your plain, boring little tacos that make you wonder where exactly your money is flying off to, these are the real deal. The tacos are made with fresh homemade white corn tortillas, and each taco is bursting with melted, delicious shredded cheese and its accompanying filling. Each different taco has a unique flavour and perfect mix of spices and zest. Make sure you don’t pass up the delicious sides, as they are the perfect compliment to these delectable tacos.
If you want to fit in with the regulars don’t even think of ignoring the famous ‘Wall of Pain’.
Sitting in the back next to the kitchen are four rows filled with some of the hottest sauces around. With labels like “Kiss your ass goodbye” and “Frostbite” you should definitely be cautious about your selection. Not being a fan of too much spice, myself, I tried to sidestep the hotter sauces and ended up with some mild and delicious options. But of course my friends wouldn’t let me leave without trying one of the hottest sauces offered. After tasting the tiniest bit on the edge of my fork I felt that pain that you usually only find in a real Mexican restaurant, that tongue burning, eyes watering, head exploding burn that takes at least ten minutes or a good shot of tequila to wash away. I went with the second option.
I’ve eaten my fair share of Mexican food in the U.S. and Flying Fajita Sistas really holds its own in comparison. Many Mexicans have brought their dishes and flavours to the U.S. and opened restaurants all over the country. With so many to choose from you obviously get the good and the bad. I believe the heart and soul of every Mexican restaurant revolves around the Margaritas and Flying Fajita Sistas wins that round hands down.
Unfortunately the secret has gotten out as to how good this restaurant is and everybody is trying to get in on the action, so I would highly recommend making a reservation. If you can’t make it to Taco Tuesday, you can drown your manic Monday blues on Margarita Monday where you can find a great excuse to morn the weekend with $9 Margaritas all night. They’ve even got some crazy flavors that will get you excited about Monday’s all over again. The Coconut and Lychee Margarita with Tromba Blanco Tequila ($15.50) is definitely a winner and the Honey and Green Apple Margarita ($15.50) and the Black Raspberry and Rhubarb Margarita ($17) are certainly getting a good sampling next time. Looks like there’s a decent amount of tequila in my future.
And if you’re in the mood for Mexican any other night, you’re sure to find your favorite dish at Flying Fajita Sistas. The Chimichangas (an extraordinary excuse to deep-fried anything!) ($21.90) and Flying Fajita dishes ($26.90) are some of their most popular and their Nachos appetiser ($12.90) became so popular that they introduced a bigger serving ($17.90).
Open seven days a week from 6 pm until late, Flying Fajita Sistas can help you make it Mexican night every night, let the fiesta begin!

I was at Flying Fajita Sisters about 3 or 4 years ago with my partner. I was impressed with their selection of tequilas and how the menu read. But the food was a different story. We were extremely disappointed with this place. Every we ordered tasted like it had been sweetened with sugar or something similar.
I am half Mexican and grew up eating homemade Mexican food back home in California. I’ve also been to Mexico more times than most would hope to do in a lifetime. So I am familiar with what Mexican food is supposed to taste like. That night was a real let down and we vowed never to go back.
But, having said this, I am encouraged by this article and hope to revisit this place in the hope of things being much different from what it was like a few years ago.
Thanks for posting this article.
