Ever since one of the founding fathers of Sydney’s French culinary scene set up shop in Woollahra almost 2 decades ago, Bistro Moncur has become an institution. Executive Chef Damien Pignolet’s eclectic menu embraces an arrangement of cuisines to create a Modern Australian perspective with the delicate touch of a French hand. The kitchen always produces a daily list of specials along with the consistent assortment of favourites that also display some seasonal surprises. The bistro’s iconic mural by Michael Fitzjames requires a visit alone, however make sure to arrive early as they do not take bookings.

For the faithful Frenchies, must tries are: for entrée the Barossa chicken liver parfait ($21)- a decent share for two. Followed by minute steak with a succulent merchants wine sauce and shoestring fries ($35) and the famed caramel glazed apple tart (17.50).

Manon is a true food enthusiast who literally has never met an ingredient she didn’t like. Even thought her inability to take orders mixed with her stubborn nature made working as a pastry chef almost impossible, she has immense respect for the trade and still loves nothing more than to bake, in her own domain.
